Free African American films at the Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum!
Join us the fourth Saturday of every month starting June 26th at 4 p.m. for free screenings of rare and historically significant films by and about African Americans.
The first film, Cabin in the Sky, stars Lena Horne, Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Louis Armstrong, Mantan Moreland, Butterfly McQueen, Duke Ellington and his orchestra, and many more. This 1943 star studded film was released during a time when theaters, especially in the south, refused to show films with prominent Black performers, so MGM took a considerable financial risk by approving the production of this film.
Lloyd Clayton, film buff and son of our founding collector, Mayme A. Clayton, will give a brief talk prior to the screening.
